Please read these terms before engaging Detectorite for a search. If you have any questions, get in touch before we begin.
1. Terms of Engagement
These terms apply each time you engage Detectorite to conduct a search for a lost item.
1.1 Who we are
Detectorite is a trading name of [Owner Name], a sole trader operating in the Auckland region of New Zealand. References to "we", "us", or "Detectorite" in these terms mean that individual.
1.2 What we do
We use specialist metal detection equipment and search techniques to locate lost items including rings, jewellery, keys, watches, and other metal objects at beaches, parks, gardens, and private properties.
1.3 Your responsibilities
To give a search the best possible chance of success, you agree to:
Provide an accurate and detailed description of the lost item, including material, size, distinguishing features, and approximate value. Photographs are strongly encouraged.
Provide a clear description of where the item was lost, including the date and time of loss where known. A Google Maps pin or marked satellite image is ideal.
Where practical, meet us on site at the commencement of the search to indicate the precise area of loss and any relevant details about how the area has been used since.
Ensure you have the legal right to grant access to the search location. For private property this means owner permission; for public land you confirm you are entitled to be present.
Inform us promptly of any changes to the search area or circumstances that may affect the search.
1.4 Fees and reward
Any fee, koha, or reward arrangement will be discussed and agreed with you prior to the commencement of any search. No charge will be made without your prior knowledge and agreement. Where an arrangement is agreed verbally, both parties accept that verbal agreement as binding. A written confirmation can be provided on request.
1.5 Items found during the search
Searches are targeted at the specific item you have described. Other items may be encountered incidentally during a search. The following applies:
Public land (e.g. beaches, parks): Any incidental items found that do not belong to you will be retained by Detectorite in accordance with applicable law.
Private property: The treatment of any incidental items found on private property will be agreed with you prior to the commencement of the search.
In all cases, if an item of apparent significant value or of cultural or historical significance is discovered, we will comply with any applicable legal obligations regarding its reporting or return.
1.6 Access and care
We will conduct all searches with reasonable care and respect for the property and surroundings. Any minor disturbance to soil or ground cover made during a search (such as small plug extractions) will be reinstated before we leave. We will not conduct a search in a manner likely to cause damage to the property.
1.7 Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of New Zealand. Any dispute arising from an engagement will be subject to the jurisdiction of the New Zealand courts.
2. Disclaimer
Please read this disclaimer carefully before engaging us to conduct a search.
2.1 Best efforts only
Engagement of Detectorite to search for a lost item is exactly that — a best efforts search. We bring specialist equipment, experience, and care to every search. However, the recovery of any specific item cannot be guaranteed, and we do not make that claim.
All searches are conducted on a best efforts basis. Factors outside our control — including the depth of burial, ground conditions, the passage of time, tidal movement, foot traffic, and the accuracy of information provided about the location of loss — can all affect the outcome of a search.
2.2 Consumer Guarantees Act 1993
Nothing in this disclaimer limits your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or the Fair Trading Act 1986. Under the Consumer Guarantees Act, services will be carried out with reasonable care and skill. This guarantee applies to the manner in which the search is conducted — not to the outcome of the search.
2.3 No liability for loss
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Detectorite accepts no liability for any loss, cost, or damage arising from an unsuccessful search, including any consequential or indirect loss. Our liability in any circumstances is limited to the fee paid (if any) for the search in question.
2.4 Information accuracy
The accuracy of the search is directly dependent on the accuracy of information provided by you. We accept no liability for an unsuccessful or misdirected search arising from inaccurate, incomplete, or misleading information about the item or its location.

4.1 What we collect
When you contact us or engage us for a search, we may collect the following personal information:
Your name, email address, and phone number
Location information relating to where the item was lost (including map pins, addresses, or photographs of the area)
A description of the lost item, which may include details of personal or sentimental value

4.2 Why we collect it
We collect this information solely for the purpose of conducting the search and communicating with you about it. We do not collect personal information for marketing purposes.
4.3 Recovery photographs
If a search is successful, we may ask for your consent to photograph the recovered item — and optionally yourself with the item — for publication on this website and associated social media. This helps others understand the value of the service. We will always ask for your explicit consent before taking or using any such photograph. You are under no obligation to agree, and declining will not affect our service to you in any way.
4.4 How we store and protect your information
Your personal information is held securely and is not shared with any third party except where required by law. We retain your information only for as long as is necessary for the purpose for which it was collected.
4.5 Your rights

4.6 Contact for privacy matters
If you have a complaint about how we have handled your personal information, you may contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz.
